Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area
A+ A-
Sun Moon Lake, also nicknamed “honeymoon lake,” has been selected as one of the “Eight Views of Taiwan” for over a hundred years. The lake is named so due to that the shape of its eastern part, which is like the sun and the western part, which is like a crescent moon. The Taiwan Tourism Bureau has not only successfully turned the lake into a paradise for honeymoon trips but also makes it a must-go destination for tourists at home and abroad. Featuring the mountain lake, indigenous culture and ecology, Sun Moon Lake attracts over six million visits a year. Visitors to Sun Moon Lake are privileged with the only “3D tour” in Taiwan, which combines water, land, and sky activities. Moreover, the round-the-lake road is honored as one of the world’s top ten breathtaking cycling routes by CNN Travel. Tourists can bike around the lake or visit historic sites like Wenwu Temple, Peacock Garden, Lalu Island, Xuanzang Temple, and Cien Tower. They can also tour the lake on a yacht or paddle boat. The 14 hiking trails around the lake further offer fabulous scenery and relaxation. Besides taking pictures on a boat, there are other favorite spots for snapshots, such as Mt. Maolan Trail, Shuishe Lakeside Trail, Chaowu Pier, Bamboo Rock Garden, Ita Thao Pier, and Shuishe Pier. Smiling faces are always the highlight of pictures taken in these places.
